Welcome to\xa0the first of two\xa0special episodes\xa0of Foreword that we\u2019re calling Unabridged.\xa0In these episodes we\u2019ll be bringing\xa0you the full conversation I had with one of our researchers.\xa0\nThis episode you\u2019ll hear our full conversation with Dr. Jason Black, Fulbright researcher with the Centre for Canadian Studies, recorded in February 2020. We wanted to bring you this conversation because Jason explains\xa0important\xa0concepts\xa0that come up\xa0in many academic disciplines\xa0and popular media, such as\xa0coloniality,\xa0decolonization, and\xa0identity. He shares how he\xa0became interested in activism\xa0and the Indigenous mascot controversy,\xa0why the language\xa0and imagery\xa0we use\xa0to talk about Indigenous issues matters, and how\xa0non-Indigenous folks can engage with these issues.\xa0\nDr. Jason Black\xa0was\xa0the 2020 Fulbright Research Chair in Transnational Studies with the Centre for Canadian Studies at Brock University.\xa0He\xa0visited from the Department of Communication Studies at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where he is a professor and the chairperson. He holds a PhD in Rhetorical Studies from the University of Maryland and has researched and published extensively on rhetoric and discourse around LGTBQ and Indigenous activist movements. His most recent publications include\xa0Mascot Nation: The Controversy over Native American Representations in Sports\xa0(co-authored with Andrew Billings) and\xa0Decolonizing Native American Rhetoric: Communicating Self-Determination.
