Unwrapping Pee Wee's Christmas Special

One of our favorite oddball TV Christmas moments is Pee Wee’s Christmas Special, a star studded hour long event that aired in 1988 at the height of Pee Wee Herman’s popularity.

In the show, Pee Wee learns the true meaning of Christmas as Santa Claus asks him to share his gifts with all the boys and girls of the world.

The series starred the regular cast of Pee Wee’s playhouse and such campy stars as KD Lang, Oprah, Joan Rivers, Annette Funicello, Frankie Avalon and a pre-HIV Magic Johnson.

Today we take you inside Pee Wee’s Christmas Special with the she-larious Irene Marquette, who is putting on a holiday extravaganza inspired by Pee Wee Herman’s Holiday Show complete with variety acts and animation in the Curio Show at Chicago’s IO Theater.

Join us as we talk about what happened to all those crazy wigs and costumes. Who was the most difficult celebrity to work with and why Paul Reubens felt trapped by his most popular character ever.
