107. 5 Steps to Start & Stick With Them

Published: Jan. 12, 2021, 11 a.m.

Creating and sticking to new habits isn’t the easiest thing in the world, but in many cases it’s much needed. Which is why I wanted to take the time to share my tips for deciding on which habits you want to change and to do it effectively.

First of all, don’t try to change your whole life in one go. Pick one or two habits to start with and make those changes. In fact, if you’ve never tried to change a habit in the past, pick something small, make the change and then move on to something bigger.

Once you’ve decided on which habits you want to change immediately, write them down. But write them down and think about them in an active sense. Your habit is not that you want to try to run on the treadmill 30 minutes a day, it’s that you DO run on the treadmill.

By putting yourself into the mindset that you already do the habit, it’ll make it easier to stick to.

Now it’s time to share it with the world, or at least someone who can help keep you accountable. This one thing is often the make or break point for many people looking to start sticking to better and healthier habits for their future.

Want to know the last two tips? Listen in and learn my tricks for actually changing my habits. If you need additional resources, check out Atomic Habits by James Clear, this is my go-to book when I need a refresher!

In This Episode:

[00:33] It’s been a long time away from the podcast but overall we had a much needed break.

[02:29] We’re sharing a quick rundown of our holidays and how they were different than in the past.

[05:12] Jesse shares some of the details of his hunting trip.

[08:32] String lights on our back deck have been saving my life these days. Hear the story.

[12:09] The second thing that’s saving my life is a clean fireplace that we can turn on.

[13:13] The combination of Audible and Scribd is saving Jesse’s life these days.

[14:25] Both Jesse and I finished the same audiobook at the same time.

[17:42] Bit of a spoiler but it was so good.

[20:19] We’re talking all about how to develop new habits.

[22:53] Keeping it simple is the best thing. Just pick one or two habits to change.

[25:53] The same applies to making changes to your diet.

[26:28] Why it’s important to write your new habit down.

[28:03] Make what you write down active instead of passive.

[28:58] Once you’ve figured out all of the details, make it public.

[29:50] Consistency is key.

[31:55] Give yourself grace and change the language that you use about yourself.

[33:30] Don’t forget to track your habit changes.

[36:47] I’ve been doing this for a while, so I have several things on my list, but definitely track.
