BIO; Dr. Tito Craige is a history teacher at Durham\nTechnical Community College in North Carolina. In the 1980s he wrote stories on\nhuman rights abuses in the Philippines. He also founded and directed the\nFarmworker School, a North Carolina program that combines literacy and\nself-advocacy skills. His movie, Voices of a Silent People, won the National\nBroadcasting Society grand prize and a story about troubled students won the\nprize for the best non-fiction writing in NC.

\n

I like to be active and I like to push myself. Five years\nago, I swam from Spain to Morocco. I've climbed volcanic peaks in Latin America\nand trekked in the Himalayas. Being outdoors, having friends, accepting my\nfoibles, listening for clues, and writing stories keep me going.

\n

I have many mentors. Some, like Dorothy Day, Father Damien,\nand my father are gone but they are always present. Mother Teresa, who suffered\nloneliness and self-doubt, is there when I feel hopeless.

\n

I am determined not to cave into fear. Listening to my heart\nis how I learn to feel sane. I rely on my wife, kids and a few friends for\ncounsel. Being a perfectionist is a way to be miserable, and I am getting\nbetter at seeing the perfection of imperfection. And I try to let go of my\nself-judgments.
