The psalmist faces a life-threatening scenario and cries out to be heard (verses 1-2). Silence leads to despair. Is it his fault? Does he deserve what the wicked should get (verses 4-5)? Then he remembers that God is merciful and gives what we do not deserve. The story moves on in verse 6, where the psalmist’s prayer finds that God did hear and has answered. God is on his side and he now throws his lot in with Him. Praise and adoration come naturally, followed by joy, shouting and thanks, with an affirmation that God is all strength for those who are called by Him. Remember that through Christ’s death and resurrection by faith you are one of those, in fact the inheritance of Him, who carries you and shepherds you for ever (verses 8-9). However, there is always the temptation to be side tracked and be drawn away by those whose motives are evil. Psalm 1 tells us not to walk stand or sit with them. The devil would love to put you in jail with them. They talk a good line of peace but harbour malice in their hearts! Filling our minds and hearts with God’s word and the Holy Spirit of truth is our antidote. This psalm is pertinent in this COVID-19 crisis where life changing events occur daily. It is also a model for daily prayer: Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving and Supplication. Walking through the Spirit in you with King Jesus our Lord. Lord, may I always remember that your ear is open to my call. Help me to see through the current doom and gloom that you are always “on my case” for your glory.
