Robert Poole\xa0joins\xa0City Journal\xa0contributing editor\xa0Nicole Gelinas\xa0to discuss\xa0Poole\u2019s new book,\xa0Rethinking America's Highways:\xa0a 21st-Century Vision for Better Infrastructure.

Americans spend\xa0untold\xa0hours every\xa0year\xa0sitting in traffic. And despite billions\xa0of\xa0taxpayer dollars spent by transportation agencies, our nation's roads, tunnels, guardrails, and bridges are in\xa0serious\xa0disrepair. According to transportation expert Poole,\xa0traffic jams and infrastructure\xa0deterioration are\xa0inevitable\xa0outcomes of American infrastructure policymaking, which is\xa0overly politicized and prone to short-term thinking.

Robert Poole, an MIT-trained engineer, is co-founder and director of transportation policy at\xa0the\xa0Reason Foundation, where he has advised numerous federal and state transportation agencies.
