Krittivaasaah: One who wears a skin. One who killed the tiger and elephant who were sent by the ascetics of Daruka forest to attack him.

Lord Shiva also once killed a demon called Gajaasura, who came in the form of an elephant and harmed the tapasvins in Kaashi. Lord killed him, peeled his skin and wore that elephant skin. This story is narrated in Skanda purana. This form of Shiva is called Gajaasura-samhaara-moorthy. Elephant is the symbol of pride for physical strength or lust and the Lord destroys that pride and humbles us .

This name is also praised in the vedas \u092a\u094d\u0930\u093e\u0923\u0947\u0936\u094d\u0935\u0930 : \u0915\u0943\u0924\u094d\u0924\u093f\u0935\u093e\u0938\u093e\u0903 \u092a\u093f\u0928\u093e\u0915\u0940
