027.2 of 108 Names of Lord Shiva : Gangadharaha - Part 2 - One who holds Mother Ganga

Gangaji is a great purifier. Swami Chinmayanandaji explains why
is she considered as a great purifier? How does Ganga-snan
purify us? She is a river of tradition, of spiritual wisdom. Even a
little of this spiritual knowledge and wisdom if one drinks and
assimilates, it will transform the person and take one beyond cycle
of birth and death.
Gangaji is a symbol of Bhakti, Jnana and Seva. Our ego can rise
when we engage in any of these three. Lord Shiva humbling the
pride of Gangaji by trapping her is symbolic of the Lord humbling
us through various life experiences.
Knowledge of the Self is not comprehensible. It cannot be
grasped by the body, mind and intellect. This is the meaning of
Gangaji flowing in Akash. A lot of hard work is required to
purify the mind and discover this. This is Bhagirath prayatna.
She was received by Lord Shiva who represents a mind who
lives in austerity, simplicity. If we cultivate such a mind, we also
can become Gangadharaha.
We must ensure we protect Mother Ganga. Protecting her is to
protect our culture, to protect lives of millions of people, to protect
bhakti, jnana & shraddha. Bhaarat is unimaginable without
Gangaji. There is a threat that she will become extinct in the next
50 years. We must ensure we do not pollute her. To purify
ourselves, we cannot make Gangaji impure. So it is our
responsibility to ensure she remains purest.
