Shiva is the first name in the 108 names. Shiva means Auspicious. The form of Lord Shiva does not seem auspicious. Infact it seems inauspicious. He has a long jata. He does not take bath for a long time. He has Ash all around his body. He has snakes around his neck. He wears an elephant skin and tiger skin. When we think of these, it appears as though He is inauspicious. Yet, He is the most auspicious because He is an embodiment of values. Each of the above things have a deep symbolism. When we understand that and meditate on His Divine Form, we internalize these qualities and we also become Auspicious.
