The Gurnsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Shaffer and Annie Burrows: a Book in Review

In this episode of Check It/ Round Table Onna discusses The Gurnsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Shaffer and Annie Burrows and why this is one of the very few works of fiction Onna likes and has read three times.  Onna considers how if you are familiar with the Netflix film of the same name, it did not do justice to the main character of Juliet and the amazing creature she truly is.  Onna considers how she appreciates the book because it considers a community as well as the main character and features a single woman discovering the joys of adopting an amazing child by the name of Kit, and how she considers Kit the treasure that she is.  Onna considers how Juliet also ends up with Dawsey, who is one of the least repellent characters in fiction, and yes, that is a compliment.  Onna considers how the dark moments of the soul that lead to good decisions, from a stable romantic relationship and good microphone purchases.  Onna adds a shout out to the character of Sidney and how he is like the brother Juliet never had and how that relationship is cool to see through Sidney's letters to and concerning Juliet to and from Sidney's sister and to and from Juliet.  The conclusion of this podcast adds a digression on how this book is similar to Spoon River in how it deals with both the individual and that individual within a group of the community and how people within it's pages do not take themselves seriously.  It's all here.  It's all real.
