For Beyond 50's "Personal Growth" talks, listen to an interview with Allan Lokos. In 2012, his planed had crashed in Myanmar. After ensuring his wife Susanna's escape, Allan stumbled from the plane with severe burns covering 33% of his body. The doctors believed that he would not life. And yet, he did. As a Buddhist, Allan had already spent decades cultivating meditative practices, a sense of calm in times of duress, and acceptance and detachment from his own human suffering (which Buddhism teaches is unavoidable in life). He was able to use these meditative skills during the plane crash, forcing himself to remain calm as he tried to free himself. These skills again proved essential when enduring the pain and frustration of a long, difficult recovery. Allan shows us his survival was not just a matter of exceptional medical treatment, nor was it simply a miracle; his practices of compassion, patience, and determination ultimately helped saved his life.
