Gathering 99: We Are the People of Pangaea

Published: Oct. 7, 2019, 2 a.m.

This past Sunday marked the celebration of the UCC tradition of World Communion Sunday. The act of Communion has a deep and fundamental heritage in Christianity as a remembrance of the last meal Jesus shared with his disciples before his death on the cross. Over the centuries, the act of communion has varied in everything from how and when it is carried out, to who is permitted to participate; a diversity mirrored by the variety of gospel accounts in the scriptures, none of which seem to unanimously agree. Despite this disparity, there are commonalities shared across the different faith communities. Join Pastor Tony Minear, Ph.D. for an in depth examination of the true meaning of communion as Jesus most likely intended. Discover its similarity to the modern theory of Pangaea in which the Earth’s plate tectonics dramatically altered the planet's surface into one supercontinent. Listen and see how we too share a singular need to connect with one another by sharing a simple meal, thus blurring the lines of distinction, to one day evolve as one humanity united in wholeness much like that supercontinent of 335 million years ago.
