This Sunday marked the beginning of Advent–the Christian tradition that serves as a time of anticipation of Jesus’ birth in the season leading up to Christmas. For many Christians, this is a time to reflect, in particular, on the biblical narrative of the miracle surrounding Jesus’ birth to a virgin, Mary. But for Progressive Christians, this biblical literalism does not resonate with the possibilities that may have been present at the time; rather it’s the narrative of a miracle that reflects the prescientific attitude toward the world and the universe that has been celebrated for centuries.
