Gathering 107: Glimpses of the Mother of Jesus-According to Gospel of Matthew

Published: Dec. 2, 2019, 8 p.m.

Can you legitimately be a Christian if you don’t believe in the biblical narrative of the miracle of Jesus’ birth to a virgin? This Sunday marked the beginning of Advent–the Christian tradition that serves as a time of anticipation of Jesus’ birth in the season leading up to Christmas. For many Christians, this is a time to reflect, in particular, on the biblical narrative of the miracle surrounding Jesus’ birth to a virgin, Mary. But for Progressive Christians, this biblical literalism does not resonate with the possibilities that may have been present at the time; rather it’s the narrative of a miracle that reflects the prescientific attitude toward the world and the universe that has been celebrated for centuries. Join Pastor Tony Minear, Ph.D. as he explores how to embrace the narrative of Jesus’ birth in light of our 21st century reality. Discover how the Bible can also support a revised view of the virgin birth that is just as legitimate as the traditional view. Listen and see how this revised view can better inform an open and affirming belief system that not only legitimizes us all, but makes God’s love real for everyone.
