Othello is a brave black general, a Moor military genius who earned the recognition of Venetian elites. Iago, for his advantage, tricks Othello into the suspicion that his wife is cheating on him. Falling for this trap, Othello gradually loses his ability to think, and finally in the end of the play, he kills his innocent wife and commits suicide.

In this episode, we will discuss representations of masculinity provided by Shakespeare in the play following certain elements such as Othello’s “otherness” in the Venetian society, the metaphorical meanings of lust in his relation with his young wife and Iago’s demonic manners.
