In 1833, construction was completed on the first penitentiary in Illinois. Located in the riverfront town of Alton, there was no other building like it in the state \u2013 and only two others anywhere in the United States. The Alton Penitentiary was \u2013 and still is \u2013 a very haunted place, and it\u2019s one from which there is really no escape \u2013 not even in death.\xa0
