Code-Switching

Published: March 3, 2020, 5 a.m.

Chris and Tyler take a look at the complex topic of code-switching. From dictionary definitions, to workplace environments and dealing with code-switching as bi-racial individuals, they attempt to tackle the whole issue.\xa0

But, before we drop all of the links, here is a look at this episode's featured beer.

  • Jack Abbey's Eis Maker barley wine
    • Eis is the German word for Ice.\xa0 A former distillation process in making Eis Beer would be to freeze it, remove the ice, and collect what remained.
While today\u2019s beer, like Eis Maker, is no longer produced this way, it is used as a connotation that the beer is very strong.
You will find this Eis Bock to be sweet, malty and boozy with notes of raisin, dark fruit and similar profile of a barley wine.

What is code-switching?

  • Dictionary definition:
    • Linguistics. the alternating or mixed use of two or more languages, especially within the same discourse:
    • Sociolinguistics. the use of one dialect, register, accent, or language variety over another, depending on social or cultural context, to project a specific identity:
    • the modifying of one's behavior, appearance, etc., to adapt to different sociocultural norms

Covering code-switching is no small task, so although we weren't able to discuss every aspect we are able to provide a couple of our favorite reads on the subject.

Code Switching: the practice of alternating between two or more languages or varieties of language in conversation. The listed articles do not reflect the views of the members of the Alternative Blacks podcast but are simply articles we found during our research.
