It’s easy to think of happiness as merely trite, shallow, or at best impermeable. Or even that happiness is fake, but what we really need is joy or wisdom or satisfaction. From Mother Theresa to Gandhi to the numberless and nameless who care for others, there is a tremendous amount of research and biographical detail about the power of compassion and service to others as being a key source of happiness and life satisfaction. The beginning of wisdom is to know yourself, and have compassion and understanding for yourself. The next step in that journey is to focus outwardly on others.
