Four months ago, Chris Cunningham, 31, decided to make a career change. As a waiter and bartender he made good money, but he knew that in the long term that he would always struggle to support his growing family. So when he found out from a friend about a full-time 15-week computer tech training program offered by Per Scholas he seized the opportunity. The Bronx, N.Y.-based school runs the classes for free to anyone with a high school diploma or equivalent and with a ninth grade math and reading level. At the end of the program, students must pass a state-administered test to become a certified computer technician.
