b'When the Great Depression hit in 1929, jobs disappeared by the millions. Unemployment lines and bread lines became common; the economy was badly wounded, and without jobs, without the machinery that made money move through the economy, its chances of recovery were slim.\\n\\nSo, as part of the Second New Deal, and driven by a presidential order from Franklin Roosevelt, the Works Progress Administration, or WPA, was signed into law on May 6, 1935. But there\\u2019s another part of the Works Progress Administration that most people have never heard of, and it\\u2019s kind of important in its own right. It was called Federal Project Number One, and it had one goal: To protect and preserve the artistic and cultural elements of American society. It had five divisions, one of which was the Federal Writers Project. This episode is about the extraordinary content that the program made possible.'
