Photo: English: This War Department Pamphlet No. 21-31 features a front cover illustration of Hitler, Mussolini, and Hirohito. Published for the War Department by the United States government printing office on 28 April 1945, though V-E Day (May 8) was still days away. Szyk was recognized as a generous contributor of art for use by the U.S. War Department, and particularly with regard to the selling of US War Bonds. This particular illustration also appeared in other printed media without the faces of Hitler and Mussolini being crossed out. It also appeared in wartime propaganda film, “Two Down and One to Go”, directed by Frank Capra. Marchione bled to death in the clear, bright sky above Tokyo. Marchione, a gunner in the US Air Force, died, like so many before him in World War II, quietly, cradled in the arms of a buddy. Though tragic, Marchione's death would have been no more notable than any other had he not had the dubious distinction of being the last American killed in World War II combat. Based on official American and Japanese histories, personal memoirs, and the author's exclusive interviews with many of the story's key participants, Last to Die is a rousing tale of air combat, bravery, cowardice, hubris, and determination, all set during the turbulent and confusing final days of World War II.
