At 23 he was recruited to go into Iraq to work with Jewish community; in 1941, the pogrom. He went there to teach Hebrew, smuggled some out to Haifa in trucks. He found Americans with cargo planes and cleverly managed to smuggle out more. Later, he disguised himself as a Frenchman; got Jews out of Iran, into Iraq, to Paris, to Marseille. Hillel, as a Briton, “Mr Armstrong,” managed to save thousands more.
