Johnson was acquitted of the charges against him by one vote and remained in office as president until the end of his term in March of 1869. Benjamin Butler, Johnson's fiercest opponent, can be seen at the far table in the center just to the right of the curving desk on the speaking dias. Butler opened the trial for the prosecution with a three hour speech reviewing historical impeachment trials starting with King John in 1215!
