Marit Berchner is a Mercator Fellow on International Affairs, focusing on integrated concepts for sustainable energy access. In the context of her fellowship, she has worked with WWF in South Africa and is currently with a company in Tanzania which sells solar home systems. Ms. Berchner studied in Berlin, Paris and Cairo and completed a Master's degree in environmental policy and planning. Before her fellowship, she worked, among others, with the German agency for development cooperation (GIZ) and the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS). Her passion for the energy sector and sustainable energy access was first sparked during a stay in Cameroon, where she supported an NGO providing pico-hydropower plants for rural electrification.
