In Pennsylvania it is legal for police to go through an individual's trash as long as it is placed outside for collection, as it is considered to be abandoned and no longer protected by Fourth Amendment rights. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that individuals have a reduced expectation of privacy for items placed outside for garbage pickup.
