Published: Feb. 23, 2023, 8 p.m.

Genaro Garcia Luna is a former high-ranking Mexican security official who served as the Secretary of Public Security in Mexico from 2006 to 2012. On December 10, 2019, he was arrested in the United States on charges of drug trafficking conspiracy and making false statements.

The indictment against Garcia Luna alleges that he accepted millions of dollars in bribes from the Sinaloa drug cartel, one of Mexico's most notorious drug trafficking organizations, in exchange for providing protection and intelligence to the cartel. The indictment also accuses Garcia Luna of lying about his association with the cartel when he applied for naturalization as a U.S. citizen in 2018.

After a trial that saw multiple former sicarios and cartel associates testify against him, Mr. Garcia Luna was found guilty and is now facing a life sentence.
