Thursday\\u2019s twelfth stage of the Giro d\'Italia was a paean not only to one of Italy\\u2019s cycling heartlands \\u2013 the verdant hills and mountains of Tuscany \\u2013 but also two legends of Italian cycling in Gino Bartali and Alfredo Martini.

\\nMartini is the lesser known of the pair but there is no doubting his status as a national sporting treasure, less for the six rainbow jerseys he amassed as the Italian team coach from 1975 to 1997 than for who he was and how he led his life.
