Arguing About Baseball
"Measuring individual accomplishments in team sports is a favorite debate among sports fans. In baseball, there is no shortage of records to choose from for comparison. For Max Wolpoff and Keith Hoehne, they are debating between Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak and Cal Ripken Jr.'s 2,632 consecutive games played.
There is little room for debate about both numbers: each is largely untouchable. For DiMaggio, the only player to come close was Pete Rose when he hit safely in 44 straight games. The Yankee Clipper did not bunt for a single one of his hits during the streak. He missed out on a huge endorsement opportunity when he fell one short of 57. For Ripken, the next closest player is the man he surpassed, Lou Gherig. The last modern-era player to eclipse even 1,000 consecutive games was Miguel Tejada, whose streak ended in 2007.
