They overcame a Republican filibuster to pass temporary legislation to keep the government funded through December 3... when Republicans will create more chaos again, just because they can. Senate Republicans are still blocking an attempt to raise/suspend the debt ceiling which, if it doesn't pass, will lead to global economic calamity. President Biden's very popular $3.5 trillion Build Back Better social spending and climate agenda still hangs in the balance, alongside the smaller bipartisan infrastructure bill. Both are being obstructed by a small handful of shameless corporatist Dems in the House, along with Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema, who have reneged on the original agreement to pass the two bills together. Sinema still refuses to negotiate the larger bill until the smaller one has passed. A leaked memo shows that Manchin wants to limit any budget reconciliation bill to $1.5 trillion, and the coal state senator (whose family profits millions from fossil fuel investments) really wants to undermine the critical climate components at the heart of the Biden agenda. Also today: cogent listener mail in response to our interview with NASA climate scientist Dr. Peter Kalmus, arguing that our climate emergency is far worse and requires far more dramatic action to cut emissions than is currently planned by both the US and EU, and why that is wildly unfair to the rest of the world. Republicans and their rightwing media machine are churning out disinformation about the Build Back Better Act, with a big whopper from Sen.
