PETER KALMUS joins us to discuss his latest article explaining why pledges by nations around the world to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions globally by 2050 are fatally flawed - - in part, because the 2050 target is not nearly fast enough to prevent catastrophic global warming, and 'net zero' allows the fossil fuel industry to continue to polluting for decades longer than is safe for humanity. Kalmus explains important concepts like not-yet-invented 'negative emissions technologies,' some of the seemingly radical policies that may ultimately be required unless governments dramatically accelerate the swift transition away from fossil fuels, and why his research has led him to issue a clarion call for world governments to move into 'climate emergency' mode.
