But a bombshell leak of a draft majority opinion out of the GOP's packed-and-stolen Supreme Court shows the radical rightwing majority plans to overturn the landmark ruling Roe v. Wade, which established the now long-settled constitutional right to access abortion services in all 50 states. Unless something changes between now and the final release in June, the draft opinion written by far-right Justice Samuel Alito will leave it to the states to decide whether women are allowed to make decisions about their own bodies. Nearly two dozen states have passed 'trigger' laws that will immediately outlaw abortion, with no exceptions for rape or incest, once the ruling is issued. Worse, the draft opinion rejects the legal underpinnings of Roe and attacks privacy rights, opening the door to overturning other rulings similarly based on 'unenumerated rights' in the Constitution, like the right to contraception, marriage equality, and inter-racial marriage. Republicans are reportedly preparing legislation to enact a national ban on abortion if they take control of Congress in the upcoming 2022 midterm elections.
