Mississippi' shatters established court precedent that had prevented minors from being charged with life in prison without the possibility of parole, in all but the most extraordinary circumstances. Ace legal reporter MARK JOSEPH STERN of Slate explains the shocking details of the case, and the appalling majority opinion written by Justice Brett Kavanaugh that consigns hundreds of people who committed crimes as children to dying behind bars. The newly emboldened rightwing activist justices on the U.S. Supreme Court simply pretended the precedent didn't exist, a position so egregiously unfounded and cruel in its jurisprudence that Justice Sonya Sotomayor called out the majority in a scathing dissent.
