b"On today's show: states and counties all across the country are finally beginning to move to new "upgraded" voting systems. In many cases, however -- in Republican and Democratic-leaning jurisdictions alike -- election officials from Georgia to California are preparing to move to touchscreen computer Ballot Marking Devices, which are even less verifiable than systems currently in use!\\xa0 Proponents claim that these new touchscreen computer voting systems are a "verifiable" record of the ballot. But as computer and security expert Professor Richard DeMillo of Georgia Tech explains, his recently published research shows half of voters do not bother to verify their computer-printed ballots before casting them, and are unable to verify, just seconds after leaving the polling place, whether an unvoted ballot accurately represents the races on the ballot they just cast, among other security vulnerabilities. DeMillo, who previously served as Chief Technology Officer at Hewlett-Packard, contends that HAND-MARKED paper ballots are the only method to ensure that elections actually reflect the will of the voters.
