Acapulco sustained widespread damage and at least 27 were killed by powerful Hurricane Otis, which shocked scientists by undergoing rapid intensification to a Category 5 storm in just 12 hours. Republicans' new far-right Speaker, Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA), is an election denier and climate science denier who has received more campaign cash from the fossil fuel industry than any other, including unlawful foreign donations from Russian oligarchs. A federal judge rejected Georgia's state and federal voting district maps as unlawful racial gerrymanders, ordering the state legislature to redraw them. In Colorado, a state court ruled that the Constitution's 14th Amendment 'Insurrectionist Disqualification Clause' is self-executing.
