Today, we are joined by a very special guest, Joe Dennis, who works with me at S.H.A.R.E. as a trauma counselor.

Joe gives us a look into his background, and—more specifically—his work as a trauma clinician. Joe describes what he’s witnessed in his role focusing on PTSD and how trauma manifests itself. We dive into how trauma changes over time and define the types of trauma that people experience.

Joe speaks into the different approaches available today to treat trauma. We talk about what tactics he’s found to be successful in overcoming trauma and achieving resiliency.

As my conversation progresses with Joe, he uncovers how trauma affects the brain. Joe explains the impact trauma has, not only physically, but mentally. We go on to discuss how trauma resurfaces and manifests through triggers even after we’ve overcome physical trauma. Joe shares his own beliefs and points of consideration to overcome the experiences we go through in our pasts.

With his focus in trauma, Joe is able to shed light on the different therapy techniques out there, and the benefits and pitfalls of each. He explains each clearly and provides examples that make them easily understandable. Joe also shares that his passion is so great for therapy because he experienced trauma himself and wanted to help others open the door to seek help.

I ask Joe about the concept of ‘trauma bonding’. We define what this is, how to spot it, as well as how to overcome it.

Joe offers rich insight and poses incredible options for individuals working to overcome trauma.

“Trauma is not based in a singular event, or even a series of events, it’s based in the meanings and the beliefs around the event.”
