EP #31 Talking Trauma Therapy with GUY MACPHERSON PH.D

Published: Nov. 20, 2020, 7 a.m.

Today, I have a fantastic guest, Dr. Guy MacPherson, from Bend, Oregon, who holds a Ph.D. in clinical psychology. He is the Trauma Therapist Project founder, which led him to create the Trauma Therapist Podcast and Trauma Therapist 2.0, a community that offers resources and training for trauma therapists.

Listen in to learn the effects of bullying on the younger generation, how his podcast interviews helped him to move past the trauma of his own bullying and when he realized the impact that bullying had on his life. Learn why what matters with trauma impact is how the individual perceives the event, not how others perceive what has happened to the individual.

Bullying and the Power Differential

Dr. MacPherson has encountered bullying in his own life and talks about the power differential of this circumstance. “You feel less than, not able to speak up and not strong enough, not empowered.”

When working with children who are bullied, he feels a strong sense to advocate and stand up for them as he can relate to their situation. He is surprised how parents brush off bullying as a “thing that kids do” or “kids just being kids.”

About Dr. Guy MacPherson, Founder of the Trauma Therapy Podcast

After receiving a Doctorate in clinical psychology and working with individuals who've encountered trauma, he decided to start The Trauma Therapist Project and The Trauma Therapist Podcast, where he brings together resources for clinicians and therapists of all kinds who are starting out on their trauma-informed journey.

For the last several years, Dr. MacPherson has dedicated himself to the study of trauma, post-traumatic growth, and, most recently, the intersection of trauma and psychosis, specifically assessing and treating signs of early psychosis.

His inspiration comes from working with the courageous individuals determined to learn and find meaning from the trials they have endured and his brother's personal experience as a Navy SEAL veteran who suffered from PTSD.
