Published: Sept. 25, 2020, 6 a.m.

1 in 6 men experience some form of abuse BEFORE the age of 18 years old. We don’t often hear men’s stories of abuse and overcoming abuse but I believe it’s crucial. Here to talk about discovering the power of his mind, embracing the wholeness in ourselves, and all things resentment is Dennis Concoby. Dennis was a family medicine doctor and is now a life transformation coach because he recognized the severity of mental illness in the world and felt the need to make a shift.

Dennis was one of nine children and experienced abuse from his parents. An event that got him thinking about this abuse was a time where someone had gotten into his father’s beloved sodas, which turned into a huge ordeal. He didn’t know how to deal with it so he locked it away deep inside himself. A theme in his early life was either these moments of abuse were normalized or they were too big to process, so he internalized them. Once he was in his medical residency program, some unusual behaviors started to come out, which the people around him noticed. After opening his own practice, he realized these behaviors really needed to be dealt with, so he suspended is medical license, embraced the need for a healing process, and got help.

“You can’t begin to heal and move forward form anything negative in your life until you have an awareness about it.”

He discovered the power of his thoughts and how his ability to control them. After realizing he had been assuming a victim role, he began questioning his thoughts and the compartmentalization of his feelings. During this episode, we talk about the stigma around therapy, the hardest part of his shadow work during the 12 weeks he spent at the intensive outpatient program, and how his wife supported him during that time. Dennis uses the practices from that program to this day! Healing is a lifelong process and it’s important to start building your toolbox of healing modalities and resources as soon as you can. He shares an important message about embracing the positive and negative within and appreciating the wholeness in ourselves. We discuss the trend of repressing abuse in men and the stigma regarding men expressing emotion. Dennis offers powerful insight into the immense courage involved in releasing emotion and breaking down your façades.

“We can not only understand the abuse and the things that we’ve been through, and not only heal from it, we can come back and we can thrive.”

Dennis speaks on how he’s implementing what he’s learned with his children to make sure the cycle stops with him, including talking about authenticity, the importance of sharing your thoughts and feelings, and not being afraid of disappointing your parents. He speaks on the challenge of knowing that you are enough and his daily practices for rewriting the story in his mind. He explains what got him into life coaching and dives into the concept of resentment and its cancerous effects on people.
