Shantel\\u2019s Backstory of Trauma and Abuse

She remembers growing up being sexually abused by her grandfather as long back as she can remember until 12. At the age of eight, she and her cousins found out that her paternal grandfather was sexually abusing them and told their parents. Her grandfather made up stories, and their parents did nothing to protect them. Looking back, she remembers her grandmother crying about the abuse, and Shantel didn\\u2019t want to make her grandmother sad again.

Achieving Accolades to Prove Her Worth

Shantel went the distance to prove her worth as a child by achieving high grades in school and going overboard with work. \\u201cI have to be conscious in checking in with myself to find out what is my intention here and what is my motive? Am I doing this to prove something?\\u201d Now, she no longer needs outside validation and does things that make her happy.

Reading Self-Help Books as a Deflection for Healing Work

As a teen, Shantel decided to read self-help books. In doing so, she realized that reading the information was a deflection from actually doing the steps needed to heal herself. \\u201cI realized that I was the one who was the people pleaser and I wasn\\u2019t setting up boundaries.\\u201d Shantel wanted to be loved and respected, and after her grandfather\\u2019s death, her father refused to make amends. It\\u2019s been seven years, and although she loves her father from a distance, Shantel has decided to place the boundary to her father that until he is ready to go to counseling with her, they won\\u2019t have a relationship.
