You don't need to work in a major institutional setting to be a research librarian. Here's an example of how one librarian who "does it all" contributes to the mission of Seed Savers Exchange (SSE), the oldest and largest non-governmental seed bank and heirloom seed-sharing organization in the United States. At the heart of many non-profits like SSE is a passion for a cause you might share, with information/research needs similar to those of larger institutions. Working in a dynamic, multitasking environment, the solo librarian serves the organizational mission by drawing upon a wide variety of competencies in librarianship, fueled by a passion for the organizational mission of preserving genetic and cultural diversity.
