"when I got diagnosed, I was probably in the “best shape” of my life. I was at the gym almost every day & eating a well-balanced diet. In fact, this led doctors to continually assert that I “was fine” and attribute my symptoms to my imagination or stress.

(Dear Drs. everywhere, please change “there’s nothing wrong!” to “I couldn’t find what is wrong”)

as many people know, I was diagnosed shortly thereafter with a rare brain disease. Though I’ve had treatments in the past, there is no cure. The diagnosis changed my life, and unlike some people with disabilities, you really wouldn’t know from looking at me.

I hope stories like mine raise more awareness around disabilities, and challenge how people think of individuals who live with disabilities.

Sick people deserve to pursue joy & not be held down by a narrative that society holds about what being sick is supposed to look like."
