At the heart of the work I do in mindfulness and compassion is the concept of non-judging awareness.

And this concept of non-judging awareness is at the heart of how we handle adversity and personal failure.

As children, most of us are taught that failure is ‘bad’.

And we carry that understanding of failure through our entire lives.

What happens when we judge failure in this way is that we see failure as a personal shortcoming; we identify with our failure so much that we become overwhelmed with shame and guilt and we wind up running from the failure as fast as we can.

The danger in this is that we never learn from our failures, which is what failure is there for!

If we did this as young children, we would never have learned to walk, eat, ride a bike, or any number of skills we currently take for granted.

But each of these skills required some level of failure!

In today’s episode, I tell a personal story that has unfolded over the past few weeks and contains some important lessons.
