While the benefits of developing the traits of compassion are quite clear, it is very helpful to first develop the trait of SELF COMPASSION.

\\nSelf judgment and self criticism are instinctive for the human mind and this is especially true for parents!
\\n
\\nWe hold ourselves to a higher standard than we ever hold anyone else.
\\n
\\nWhile working with people, I often hear that this self criticism and holding ourselves to this far higher standard is \\u2018what gives me my drive\\u2019.
\\n
\\nAnd I answer this in two ways: first, I demonstrate the latest research which unequivocally refutes this notion and shows the exact opposite to be true.
\\n
\\nThen I ask people to try a simple exercise for a few minutes every day.
\\n
\\nTwo weeks later, nearly without exception, these folks who were so sure of the benefits of self criticism tell me how much better they feel and how much MORE motivated and efficient they are.
\\n
\\nAnd the parents among these folks tell me how much more connected they feel with their kids and how much more cooperation they get from their children as well.
