Tune in to this week\\u2019s episode of Shaping Success with Wes Tankersley as he talks to Chase Waters aka Pistol Black about his story of success.
Pistol Black\\u2019s success story started in Mississippi where he grew up. He got into music by watching recordings of music videos from MTV his friends would record from their VCR and give to him since he only had one or two channels. He was enthralled by the videos, especially Peter Gabriel\\u2019s Sledge Hammer. From there his friend showed him how to play guitar, then his road to success led him to getting his first drum set, then he started a band with a friend.
He has a rock band named Candy Bone that\\u2019s about to release their first single and video from their debut album. He mentions that his band mates have other obligations to other bands and projects, so he created Pistol Black as his outlet. His success meaning as a solo independent artist is that he can do what he wants without anyone telling him what to do.
He says as an independent artist, he does the graphic design, marketing, and management himself. His affirmation for success is a One-Man Label. If there was a record deal, there would be people to do that for him, but he would have to pay for it and most likely lose creative control.\\xa0 He wants to be independent as long as possible.
The recording industry can affect the mental health and cause people to just give up. He will not give up. His music career is his life, therapy, and oxygen; his living passion. How does Pistol Black deal with haters? He says he doesn\\u2019t get many haters. The haters he gets are usually from his cover songs. His mindset for achievement in dealing with haters is to talk shit right back to them. Once in a while, a hater will turn into a fan.\\xa0 He and Wes discussed covers such as Johnny Cash\\u2019s cover of Nine Inch Nail\\u2019s song \\u201cHurt\\u201d and Weezer\\u2019s cover of TLC\\u2019s \\u201cScrubs.\\u201d
Pistol Black\\u2019s song \\u201cYou\\u2019re Still (my Hometown)\\u201d is about how he goes out on the road and stays in other places, but 3 hours from where he lives, there is a lot of filming done.\\xa0 So he feels though his hard work, he should get support from his hometown, or he better move to Nashville and try something else.\\xa0
What advice does Pistol Black have for people wanting to get into the music industry? Don\\u2019t stop! Failure is your friend because every failure is a learning experience. With failure, you learn what not to do.\\xa0
