February's Theme: A New Perspective On Self-Education
For this entire month I will be joined by Steve Patterson, a home-educated and self-taught Rationalist philosopher, to explore five key principles of learning that are translatable to just about any pursuit.
Principle #5: Embrace Your Incompetence
Ego is perhaps the biggest obstacle in the way of learning. People get wrapped up in the appearance of competence or the appearance of knowledge, and they rarely allow themselves to admit being wrong. You might think of ego as a huge methodological error. In reality, failure is your best friend. Failure is immediate feedback that “something is wrong.” And it’s a necessary part of the process for everyone. You literally cannot get from beginner to expert without failing and being wrong.
