SAM 011 | Interview with Seattle Fire Department Training Chief Phil Jose

Published: July 11, 2014, 11 a.m.

On this episode I had the opportunity to tour the Seattle Fire Department training facility and I sat down and talked with Phil Jose, the training chief for the Seattle Fire Department. During the interview, Chief Jose shared some of the things he is focused on to improve the situational awareness and\xa0decision making\xa0abilities of Seattle firefighters including:

\n

\xa0

\n

1.Conducting Post Incident Analyses (PIA) of major fire incidents, defined as one that results in a firefighter injury, a civilian fatality, or a 3rd\xa0alarm or greater.

\n

\xa0

\n

2.Their efforts toward officer development despite the challenges of operating short staffed (roughly 100 vacant firefighter positions).

\n

\xa0

\n

3.How they are working to instill the core competencies of Trust, Competence and Vision in their members.

\n

\xa0

\n

4.How they are working with company officers\xa0who\xa0would be arriving first-in at fires to develop situational awareness and make high quality decisions.
