This episode was inspired by some synchronistic events: a coaching conversations, ponderings on my new tattoo, and an essay by Carl Jung.

Rites of passage were once an important piece of psychology development in men that both helped one access his unique gifts and potency, but also aligned his power with the needs of the tribe. Due to post-agricultural/industrial/consumerist developments, we've largely replaced this with societal norms that mostly repress the individual.

This episode covers:

  • How to develop creative purpose without tribal initiation
  • The "Matrix of the Psyche": Personal vs. Collective // Conscious vs. Unconscious
  • Biological definition of archetypes
  • Eastern vs. Western cultural assumptions about collectivity and individuality
  • The virtues vs. dangers of Collective Identity
  • How Hero's become tyrants
  • The Halo Effect in cult psychology
  • Some sexual applications

Episode (literally) brought to you by Single Origin Skincare-- a non-profit that turns coffee waste into high quality soap, then uses the profits to buy education supplies for children in Thailand. My friend who founded it happened to also give me the book by Carl Jung that I reference throughout this episode. His sustainable products can be found at a discount on his indiegogo.
