In two 207 episodes I’ve never had one hold as much meaning as the one you are about to listen to. The September 11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre became not only the single deadliest terrorist attack in human history, but also the deadliest incident ever for firefighters, as well as for law enforcement officers in the United States. 2753 lives were tragically lost that day 343 firefighter deaths amounted to a third of estimated 1000 emergency personnel at the scene. FDNY Division Chief for Lower Manhattan Peter Hayden later told the commission: "We had a very strong sense we would lose firefighters and that we were in deep trouble,. “But we had estimates of 25,000 to 50,000 civilians, and we had to try to rescue them.” Erin has spent the last decade and a half devoted to researching the physical, mental and emotional effects of 9/11 on the emergency service personal at the scene… A ‘project’ which was supposed to be a one-off piece of research. 20 years on and the repercussions are continuing to unfold. To say I’m blessed to have the opportunity to share this episode with you is a vast understatement. Many mainstream media outlets were knocking in Erin\'s door. She approached me to offer up hosting this conversation as one of the very few she partaking in.
