A project to rebuild a derelict wharf in Tokomaru Bay north of Gisborne has taken a small step forward and its supporters hope it'll mean big things for the town. Several East Coast communities had bustling wharves in the early 1900s when a lot of New Zealand's farm produce was transported by sea. The Tokomaru Bay Heritage Trust's Andrew Jeffard told Country Life's Sally Round that four test piles will go in to replace the rotting ones currently under the wharf. He says a lot more funding is needed to take the job further.
