The independent panel investigating a culture of abuse in gymnastics is defending its decision not to outline specific incidences of abuse in the sport. A climate of fear and retribution in gymnastics has been highlighted by the report which was released yesterday and received over 200 submissions. The report also highlights concerns about safety and well being of athletes, bias in the judging process, fears of speaking up and a loss of trust in Gymnastics New Zealand. The panel was headed by sports integrity expert David Howman who told sports editor Stephen Hewson there were consistent themes from those who made submissions and described the sport as being in a dark place.
