Texas Workforce Commission holds its first ever conference in RGV

MCALLEN, Texas - The Texas Workforce Commission is holding its first ever conference south of San Antonio.

The two-day 6th Annual Apprenticeship Texas Conference wraps up Sept. 23 at the McAllen Convention Center. For the last five years the conference has been held at the River Walk in San Antonio.

In an interview with the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service, TWC Commissioner Julian Alvarez says he and his board are delighted to have chosen to hold the event in the Valley. He said the turnout on day one has been huge, along with the enthusiasm of the participants.

Alvarez said the discussions at the conference will be taken back to Washington, D.C. A Department of Labor representative attended the event, Alvarez pointed out.\\xa0

\\u201cThis is a huge deal. You can see people are hungry for information,\\u201d Alvarez said.\\xa0

Alvarez is a national Apprenticeship Ambassador. The Apprenticeship Ambassador Initiative, run by the U.S. Department of Labor, seeks to create a national network of employers, labor organizations, industry associations, program sponsors, educators, workforce intermediaries, minority serving organizations, community-based organizations, and other stakeholders to serve as champions for expanding and diversifying Registered Apprenticeship.
