MCALLEN, Texas - The STC Foundation has raised almost $1 million and its inaugural gala is still one week away.

Dr. Rodney H. Rodriguez, vice president of institutional advancement and economic development for South Texas College, gave the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service an update on the gala, which takes place at the Mission Event Center on Oct. 5, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

“We have reengaged the STC Foundation and we have recruited new board members for this inaugural gala that we're going to have on October 5. I'm very happy to report that we have raised almost a million dollars for this event, which will go to support our students in different areas, academic certifications, micro credential certificates,” Rodriguez said.

“It’s just been a great response from the community and we're very, very happy about that.”

Asked why there is so much support for STC in the community, Rodriguez said: “The main reason is because they know our demographic, they know the students we serve and sometimes, you know, life happens for our students and we would be able to utilize these resources that we raise that are unrestricted to be able to help when life happens, be it the light bill or like the car didn't turn on; I can’t go to class. Whatever it may be, right.”

Rodriguez added: “So, the gala is October 5th at the Mission Event Center from 6:00 to 9:00 (p.m.) and we hope you can be there. We're sold out but we can put more tables there if we get some more donors, so, definitely, we’re looking forward to it.”
